The Selkie and her skin.

Description

To explain the Selkie legend, I'll tell one of the stories:

In Scotland and Ireland, on the rocky shores and blue depths near the fishing villages the Selkie lived in peace. They were a playful race, and had the ability to take off their seal skins and run around and sunbathe on the shore, which they did. One day, a young woman Selkie wandered too far from her skin, and it was stolen by a fisherman who knew the legend. He hid it, knowing that without her skin she could not return to the water, and would be forced to become his wife, which after begging for her skin to no avail, she did. she stayed in a cottage with him, and had a baby, and as the child grew up he sometimes noticed his mother staring off sadly into the sea. When he asked her why, she usually shook herself out of her dream state and said everything was fine, nothing was amiss. One day though, without thinking, she replied instantly "because the water is my home, and I can never return to it." the child, knowing the myths of the area, instantly knew what his mother needed, and went and brought her skin to her. when she asked how he found it, amazed, he said "father picked it out a long time ago, from a hiding place when you were out, and looked at it for a long time. I knew it meant something, but until today I didn't know what that was."

The Selkie woman kissed her child's head, and whispered "I will always love you," then ran out to the tide and jumping into her skin, leapt into the waves, freed by her child.
